Need Microsoft?

May 3, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 3 Comments

Well, while I was in the Army, I always had access to a computer with the entire Microsoft Office Suite on it. And I am sad to say that I became a proficient “Powerpoint Ranger“. (That’s what they called those of us who slaved away making nifty briefing presentations-yeah, I know I was a maintenance officer)

Our home Office Suite only includes Word and Excel, and since I’ve left the Army I found that I actually miss using Powerpoint software. Not that I miss compiling 7 different Brigades 200 page presentations for the quarterly trianing briefings and making sure that noone changed the format, font size, order of slides or forgot to include any of the info. . . . and lets not talk about printing out endless copies of said briefing on a color printer that only prints 3 pages per minute and then hand binding them. . . . .ahhh, I love being a SAHM 🙂

But I liked certain functions that you can just do easier in Powerpoint than in Word. I like the way you can use the entire page in Powerpoint-It doesn’t have as wide of a margin around the page as Word does. It is so much easier to move pictures and emblems around, and to rotate and change the text. I really like it much better for making posters and fliers, printing out picture collages, and making my own personal from scratch greeting cards.

Well, while I was over at “Frugal for Life” the other day, there was a post on free software that folks use. One of the other commentors mention an entire Microsoft Office type suite that you can get for free! (Thanks Aaron) It is called “Open Office” and includes a spreadsheet, database, word processor, presentation software, drawing program and a mathmatical function creator (whatever that is). They are all supposed to be compatible with Office (as well as some other things) if you save the files in the correct format.

I haven’t actually used any of it yet, but the site looks to be longstanding and professional. I plan on downloading the “Impress” software soon (that’s the Powerpoint type one) to check it out. If you need some software, I’d give it a look!

Ok, pop ups are back, and I do not know what happened. They were gone as of yesterday.

Evelyn-I am going to delete the service that I think is causing them, probably during the day tomorrow. Thanks for the info 🙂
