Off of My Game!

August 14, 2007 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 13 Comments

Sorry folks, I know that some of you must have been wondering where my post was yesterday. I did promise Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the summer!

To start with, my laptop is on the fritz. OK, so that is a slight exaggeration-the fan started making a very loud whirring noise-you could hear it in the next room! I was afraid that it wasn’t cooling the hard drive adequately, and didn’t want to fry anything. Since it is only a couple of months old, so I contacted the online company that I bought it from. No problem-it’s under warranty. But I had to send the entire thing back (I pay to send it back, they fix it for free and pay to return it). I mailed it on Sat, it probably won’t arrive in California till today, they have 3 business days to fix it, then they will mail it back, but it will get caught in the weekend there and I probably won’t have it back till mid next week some time.

Grrr.

And our desktop has been acting r–e–a–l–l–y s–l–o–w lately. Long story short, it is making posting difficult.

Add on to that the fact that we found a house that I LOVE and had to go view it, do lots of discussion (between Yankee Bill and I) etc etc etc about whether we should buy it or not. We are going to view it again this afternoon, along with my wonderful mother in law (for the extra set of eyes) and may put a bid in on it. This needless to say has occupied a lot of attention and brainpower-leaving not a lot left over for a blog post yesterday.

Just in case you are wondering, the house is right here in town, we’d be moving less than 3 miles. When we moved “back home” after our military service, we bought and paid for a very cute little raised ranch. The emphasis is on LITTLE. We’ve been sort of on top of each other without adequate storage space for the last 3 years. This does wear on family harmony 🙂

We moved into this house with a plan to either buy a bigger house (which had to meet quite a few stringent qualifications-more on that another day) or else build an addition on this house within 7 years. After some research on the cost of an addition-we decided that buying a larger house and then renting this one out would be a better option for us. Houses within the physical limits of our town are at a premium (one of those stringent requirements was a fairly limited geographical area) so we’ve been viewing anything that looked like a possibility.

There was no luck until this weekend. This house is a GORGEOUS, well maintained, turn of the century house with all original hard wood floors and woodwork, a recent renovation to the attic to make it into a master bedroom suite, and an updated kitchen. PLUS it would more than double our current living space. Oh, and it has a barn that can fit 4 cars and has a second floor.

So please, say some prayers that if it is meant to be we will get this house, and bear with me for a few days if my posting is a bit erratic.

What a fun decision to contemplate! We love to think about what it would be like to live in various houses. You’ll be in my prayers.

Better sell your old house or at least make it a contingent on your new purchase contract. Wouldn’t want you to turn your blog into a blah.

Since you’re going to be so close, though, I don’t see any problem with keeping the current house as a rental. It seems to suit the “culture” of your family.

(We are trying to buy the house next door to us for a rental.)

I’m super excited for you! And pray? Yes!

Janelle & Anon #1-Thank you, I appreciate it.

Anon #2-We aren’t selling our current house. We own it free and clear with no mortgage currently, and I qualify for a 0% down VA loan (which has no prepayment penalties) so the intent is to buy the new house and rent the old one out at about $800 a month, which will go to the mortgage on the new house. Thanks for the concern though 🙂 I don’t intend to go “blah”.

Rebecca-Thanks! Neither of us has ever been landlords before 🙂 One of the reasons we want to keep this house is that it is a perfect size for a couple-so maybe when the kids are gone and we are spending part of the year somewhere else (living in the RV? Riding the motorcycles down south etc) we can sell the bigger house and move back into the smaller one. Good luck on your venture into landlord land too. . .

Sounds great! I live in a turn of the century house and I love it. 🙂 If this works out sounds like it is win win.

Ya we lived in one built in the 1880s. It was a real homestead complete with antique stoves, no dishwasher and very unique. I miss it. It had to be sold though. One thing I don’t miss is no insulation because, that uped some costs considerly. Wow, congratulations !! My hubby is eligible for that program too so, we are looking for a new one too. I rent now. That house sounds like a happy ending to a fairy tale. I have to use a fan for my computer too.. Good luck and your blog is never Blah !!! I love it!! In my town you are a Blog celebrity!!! thanks, Annette

    Barb, Annette, Lynnae and Howtome-

Thanks! We put in an offer, so we shall see. We offered about $6,000 less than their asking price, but said that they had to have a tree removed (that a tree surgeon has already said is half dead and needs to come down) and have the chimney repointed, and take all the junk in the barn when they go. But we also said that we’d be willing to close in 45 days, and then rent back to them until April if they needed to (my understanding is they haven’t found a house to live in yet) and that they would have until we moved in to accomplish those things. Hopefully the fact that they can get the money now, but take some time to find the place they want will help.
