Quick Tip: Cleaning Sneakers

May 16, 2009 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 5 Comments

I looked down at my sneakers yesterday and realized they were looking pretty darn grubby!

I feel that good shoes are very important so it is one of the areas that I willingly spend more money on. I really find my New Balance 844’s (now they are making the 845’s-whatever) to be the most comfortable, supportive walking sneakers. They have a good sturdy heel cup and the orthotics for my fallen arches fit easily inside. But at almost $100 a pop, I want to make them last. Throwing out grubby sneakers and buying a new pair is not an option, I’ve got to clean them.

I’ve found two great frugal options for cleaning sneakers without buying those bottles of “sneaker cleaner”.

#1-Magic Erasers. These things work like a charm on white sneakers! They also work like a charm on a lot of other things so I always have one in the house. I buy the cheaper off brand ones.

#2-Shaving Cream. It’s true-old fashioned white foamy shaving cream can clean your sneakers! Buy a cheapo can of Barbasol at your local dollar store and use it with a scrub brush on your sneakers, then wipe off. Viola!

Have fun, and have clean sneakers.

Great post! Another trick I have found is to use a little nail polish remover on a cotton ball – cleans them right up!

The shaving cream is also good on carpet spots if it is the regular old foamy kind. I have used it on white carpeting with fabulous results.

I use a combination of baking soda and Dawn liquid, and scrub them with a toothbrush. Works especially well on the white “foamy” sole between the actual shoe and the bottom sole.

I also like to use a product called Greased Lightning. A little bit on a wash cloth with remove just about any dirt and grime from shoes! (and takes a lot of laundry stains out, too!)

    Hi,
Do you wipe shaving cream dry?

    Thanks!

You let it sit for a minute or so and then wipe it off while it’s still wet/damp.
