Shopping Around the World

February 8, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 2 Comments

Well, not really. But have you tried shopping at one of the ethnic markets near you? Today I stopped in at a little oriental market I like-Kim’s Grocery on Vestal Parkway. There are many deals to be found! Just a few are:

Rice, 25lb bag of Jasmine Rice for $11.99, or $.48 a lb

Lentils, 4lbs for $3.49

Mung (spelled Moong) beans 2lbs for $1.99 (These are the kind you can sprout for those chinese bean sprouts-2 TBS beans make a cup of sprouts! Posting on how to sprout coming soon.)

You can buy large jugs of soya sauce cheap, and they have all sorts of interesting asian condiments, spices (both typical and exotic) and mixes-For example I love to buy the curry mix cubes-1 pkg for a little over 2 dollars makes sauce for 2 large meals. Yes, their are a lot of other things I could eat that would be cheaper, but it is a little something interesting to spice up dinner-and compared to takeout it is much cheaper.

I’d love to hear what the favorite bargains and buys at ethnic markets near you are.

Oh, and for those of you who are wondering what you do with 25lbs of rice, I’ll address that tomorrow.

For those who are trying to avoid refined sugar, a friend told me that she buys the mexican packets of azucar morena for much less than sugar in the raw. Even though it literally means brown sugar, it’s really raw/turbinado sugar. I know regular sugar is cheaper, but if your health depends on it (as my friend’s daughter’s case), it is a good thing to know.
