Starting Work and a Quick DIY

June 12, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 3 Comments

Well, today is my first day of work at a little botique here in town. I’ll be working a full shift (10-4) every Monday and a half shift (12-5) 2 Sundays a month. I’m hoping that this will be a fun way for me to get out of the house a little bit and interact with some more adults while bringing in a bit of cash. I’ll be making $8 an hour, although the cash aspect won’t be great once I pay for the kiddos to be in daycare 🙂

I actually found the job myself-it wasn’t advertised. I really like the little shop, and have been in quite a few times just to look around. It’s a small shop, and pretty much run constantly by the two owners and one other employee. I figured that they might not want or be able to afford a full time employee, but that someone adult and responsible to fill in a few hours here or there might provide a welcome break for them. So one day I told the owner “You know, I’d be the perfect employee for you guys-I really only want to work a little bit each month, and I’m totally over qualified with an MSM in Management and 11 years of managing folks in the Army”. He agreed and told me to fill out an application.

So, Ta-Da! Here I go off to my first day of work in over a year today. A friend is watching the kids today (I’m still ironing out regular daycare), I made them a bag lunch last night (they helped make trail mix, which they thought was so cool) and I’m throwing venison, cream of soup and carrots into the crockpot as soon as I get done blogging. I also have my TOPS meeting and a theater board meeting tonight, so I wanted a super easy supper. Usually on Monday nights DH plays pool, but tonight they don’t play so I don’t even have to get someone to watch the kids. The planets are just aligning for me!

On to a quick Do It Yourself-I found this tutorial online for DVDs into CD wallets, and am ditching the cases. Although 95% of DH’s and my CD collection is in those big CD wallets, I have yet to convince DH that it is Kosher to ditch the cases. When I do (I will win eventually!), this would be a great project to use up a few of them with.

Congratulations and good luck! Wow, you approached the idea of that job in a very smart way. Instead of asking, “are you hiring?” you came right out and told them why they should hire you! I hope you enjoy working there!
