OK, this really doesn’t have anything to do with Frugality, but it’s interesting and I want to share.
Today all the 11 Moms received a letter from Walmart’s Senior Vice President of Sustainability, inviting us (and all of our readers) to listen in on Walmart’s China Sustainability Summit in Beijing. There is a live webcast being broadcast from 7-11pm CDT tonight! After the Summit has ended, there will be replay and highlight videos available.
From his letter:
So, what’s going to happen at the Summit? Wal-Mart President and CEO Lee Scott, along with other company leaders, will build support for more environmentally and socially responsible practices throughout the global supply chain. In attendance will be more than 1,000 suppliers, Chinese officials and representatives from environmental organizations.
The overriding theme of the Summit is to meet social and environmental standards, drive innovation and efficiency and build stronger partnerships in the global supply chain. We also plan to make a series of commitments that apply the company’s global sustainability vision to its China operations. We aim to become China’s leading sustainable retailer. This underscores our global sustainability efforts to use 100 percent renewable energy, create zero waste and sell products that sustain our resources and environment.
Wow. Pretty interesting stuff. Wouldn’t it be amazing if the worlds largest retailer could influence China to be more social responsible? More sustainable? Money talks, so I think that interesting things could happen here.
I’ve even heard a rumor that Cameron Diaz asked to attend the summit.
What the heck, I can catch “Fringe” on Hulu.com, I think I’ll be tuning into the Sustainability Summit tonight.

This is great to hear- I totally avoid Walmart because of concerns about their business practices relating to sustainability, work conditions in China, and fair wages paid to workers here & abroad. If they're serious about addressing some of these issues, I might consider shopping there again.
The hour or so I watched was very interesting. Their is an entire section on it in their sustainability page now.
