Who Needs This?

March 31, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 7 Comments

Microwave cleaning wipes? You put them in the microwave, nuke it and the package pops open and the cleaner turns into steam. Then you use the wipe to wipe the microwave down.

Uh, excuse me if I’m missing something but how is this any better than just microwaving a dish of water (or water with vinegar if you are feeling frisky) and wiping the loosened off crud with a washcloth?

I’ve never had ANYTHING that didn’t come off with just water, which is free. Why would I pay over $5 for 6 wipes?

I had tried these–I think I had a free sample or a coupon/sale or something. They worked just fine, but then I learned about the vinegar and water trick and I’d never pay anything for this again. It’s just out there for people who don’t know any better!
It was kinda cool to see it explode, though…

This is a prime example of what frugal people do not buy, and why you get to spend $57 on quality materials. Quality materials that you can sell later, or donate.

I’m wondering if the vinegar and water trick would work on the microwave we have at work? The inside is absolutely disgusting, encrusted with years worth of splatters and stains. No matter how many signs you post, people do not cover their food, nor do they clean up after themselves.

If I could afford products like that, I think I could afford a housekeeper!
That’s so ridiculous it almost funny.

I was just thinking about the convenience thing. I don’t mind paying for convenience…but the time I save better be WAY more than the money I spend! Seems for $5 you are only saving about a few seconds. Now…if they had something like this that would clean a real oven in a matter of seconds, it might be worth it.
Even better would be a ‘bomb’ that would clean the fridge and get rid of moldy oldies at the same time.
    Ahhh…I can dream, can’t I?

Glad to see that you all agree with me 🙂 To me this does highlight the sorts of things that frugal people do to save money that are easier than using the “convenience” stuff from the store. It doesn’t cost me anything to fill a dish with water, and it saves me a trip to the store, as well as doesn’t contribute to the land fill etc or add funky extra chemicals to my home. And as KJ pointed out-avoiding these sorts of things are what enables me to have discretionary cash to spend on the things I really do want/need.

How is this for THE most frugal idea of all-wipe up spills and splatters as soon as they happen & you NEVER have a dirty microwave to clean!
I empathize with the person with the work microwave problem this seems to be a universal problem-people will be so indifferent at work to the appliances and mistreat them as they never would the ones they own.
