I have jumped onto the “Works for Me Wednesdays” bandwagon. This is a feature that was started by Shannon at “Rocks in My Dryer“. Every Wednesday folks do a short entry on their blog about a little organizational type tip that helps make their life run smoother. It doesn’t have to be earth shattering, it just has to “Work” for me.
This weeks tip is easy. I took a cute little pencil case I found at the thrift store and made a small sewing kit. Inside is a small pair of scissors, a spool each of white, black, and button hole thread, a couple of pre-threaded needles stuck through a piece of cardboard (I figure 8 the thread around the needle so it doesn’t get tangled), a thimble, a couple of buttons and a few safety pins. I keep it on top of my refrigerator.

Now when I come across an item that needs to be repaired, I can just pull down the kit, use a pre-threaded needle, and it is done. Sometimes I’ll toss the item up there on top of the fridge with it so I have to see it all day and then I’ll mend it in front of the TV later that night.
Since I started doing this a few years ago, things actually get repaired, instead of disappearing into a pile of “I’ll do it someday” mending down in the laundry room. It “Works for Me”.
Shannon keeps a comprehensive list of all the “Works for Me Wednesday” links, so head on over to her site to check them all out.

THAT is a fantastic idea! Thank you! I have so many things just sitting here, needing ONE button…
That is a great idea! I hate having to dig through my sewing stuff to just do a quick mend. I have an unused eyeglass case that might be perfect for this!
I love it! Great idea.
What a neat idea and just in time for my quilting project that I want to start. Thanks SO MUCH for sharing! 🙂

Great idea! So simple, I think I can manage it. Thanks!
I do something similar, but I use a soap dish (one with a lid)
Good idea! Now if you could teach me to sew on a button, we’d be in business. 🙂
What a smart idea. I am going to do this so that next time my DH comes to me with a shirt it doesn’t take me six months to sew that pesky button on!
There is such a thing as button hole thread? All these years and I never knew. I’m going to go check it out. I think I will keep this kit in my mending basket…maybe then I’d actually get to it! Thanks!
What a great idea. I should make one for my DH to have at work. He is always losing buttons there.
Glad everyone liked it.
Yes, there is button hole thread. It is much thicker and stronger than regular thread. I’ve also heard of folks sewing buttons on with dental floss (the white kind) for stregnth, or using a dab of clear nailpolish on top of the stitches to help keep it from fraying. Haven’t tried either of those personally though.
I’m a little late getting here, but I love this tip. I want to look around your site a bit more too, as I see you also like the Tightwad Gazette! We try to live frugally too!
Great idea! These would make great graduation gifts, too. Thanks for your post.
That’s a great idea! Thanks for sharing.
How clever. I need to try this!
