Works for Me Wednesday!

May 31, 2006 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 15 Comments

Works for Me Wednesday is a great feature started by Shannon over at Rocks in My Dryer. If you want to see all the entries (there are usually 70 or so by the end of the day), click on the banner to get back to her site. If this is your first time at my site, Welcome! Please stay a while and look around. I blog about frugality and saving money-the entry directly below this one is the weekly “Festival of Frugality” roundup, which will give you lots of great articles to read on how to save!

Now to my tip:

I buy rice in those big bags at the Asian food store. Once I figured out that a standard yogurt cup is approximately a measured cup, I decided I would just leave one in there as a scoop.

I also have one in each of my flour canisters on the counter (white & wheat) and the sugar canister.

I just love to repurpose things and keep them out of the landfill! Hey, it “Works for Me”.

Great tip! I do that with my bucket of bird seed. Either way it encourages the kids to “reuse” instead of “throw out!”
Love your canisters, BTW. Very pretty šŸ™‚

Cool! Now I have to ask…how long does the rice stay fresh? I’m not sure that it ever does go bad. But it seems buying it in a larger container than I usually do would be a lot cheaper! (10 lbs. would be about my limit. I can’t lift much heavier.)

That is a good idea. It’d save on dishwashing, too!

That’s a great tip….how long does the rice last? We eat a lot of rice at home and I get frustrated having to buy the smaller bags but usually am too scared to buy the big one for fear that it will go bad before we get to it all.

Do mice like rice? That’s what I’d be worried about. My spouse puts rice and all other grains in glass jars (reused spaghetti and peanut butter jars, usually) so they don’t attract critters. I’d be worried that a mouse would nibble the bottom of a big rice bag.

Otherwise, I love the idea of buying such a large bag. I may try that. My 2-yr-old lives on rice with yeast sprinkled on top.

Great tip! I save all of my yogurt containers too and reuse them by filling them with pudding and such for the kid’s lunches. I even make the teachers keep them in his lunch bag now because they used to throw them away. I think they are realizing that this frugal mom means business šŸ˜‰ Thanks for sharing and (as always) love your blog!

We buy rice like that too! It lasts so much longer than the little bags and cost so much less.

We have found that if you keep the bag in a plastic container, no bugs will enter it and make a comfy home.

    Thanks for sharing your idea!

The 25 LB bag of rice cost me $11 at the Asian grocery store. For those of you that liked the rice-ethnic groceries are a great place to pick up legumes, rice, noodles etc at great prices. And it is fun to do with the kids-there are so many different products to see.

I’ve kept the bag in my closet next to the kitchen for 3 or 4 months and never noticed any problems with it. The rice itself doesn’t go bad as long as you keep it dry. However, if critters are a problem (or humidity) wherever you live, you might want to buy a rubbermaid tub, or find some frugal equivalent to keep the rice in.

WOW that is a great idea. I’ll have to try it with the pet foods to since my kids like to use my glassware as a scoop.

We have a huge Asian population in our town and you’re right about the low prices in their speciality stores. I keep my big bag of rice in a rubbermaid container and it doesn’t go bad. (there’s just the two of us)
    Love you site..
