Works for Me Wednesday-Movie Philosophy and Organizing DVDs

June 13, 2007 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 10 Comments

oops-edited to add WFMW link!

We don’t buy many movies here at the Frugal Upstate household-we tend to borrow them from the library, or to rent them via our Netflix subscription. It seems wasteful to buy something that will probably only get watched a single time. (Although Yankee Bill has watched Caddy Shack, all the James Bond Movies and all the Star Trek movies more times than I can count!-We do have those on VHS)

However with children in the house you do seem to accumulate a lot of children’s movies. Since children tend to watch the same movie over, and over, and over, the cost per viewing is MUCH lower than for adults and therefore more worthwhile.

We also tend to avoid network TV due to questionable content of many of the shows (Sponge Bob? Not a children’s show.) as well as advertising. Honestly-the kiddos only watch PBS or Disney channel, and then only for certain hours during the day. I’d rather have them watching a DVD that I’ve previewed and know the content of.

DVDs are good as well for the portable DVD player that we install in the car only for long trips. When you are driving for 7 to 13 hours in the car, that thing is worth it’s weight in gold. Staying sane is much more frugal than being sent to the mental ward at the nearest hospital due to repetitions of “Mama, Buddy’s touching me!” from the back seat.

But how do you keep all those DVDs from taking over the living room? For a while we had towers of DVD cases stacked on all sides of the TV. Those things can take up a lot of room.

Enter the Dollar Store CD wallet. Preferably with zipper:

Since most DVD’s have the title of the movie printed in full color right there on it, and you don’t need a playlist like you might for a CD, I put another DVD into the pocket meant for the CD cover, thus doubling the number of DVDs that fit in a case. Our entire collection fits in 3 cases (with room to spare).

The additional bonus is that when you are visiting a friend who doesn’t have children, going on that long car trip with the DVD player in the car, or heading to Nana’s house, you can just grab a CD wallet, stick it in your purse, diaper bag etc and you instantly have about 24 movies in a minimal amount of space to chose from when the kiddos get to rambunctious.

Now I just have to convince myself that it really is OK to throw out those empty DVD cases.

I did this in college, because dorm rooms are not conducive to storing lots of DVD cases (and they tend to disappear less when hidden in a CD case.) It was very convienent

My husband thought the CD case scratched the DVDs worse than individual DVD cases, so we’re back to having all the DVD cases displayed…

I do this for the girls’ computer games, and also DVDs whe we go on a trip. Because I, like you, can’t make myself throw the cases away, most of our DVDs still reside in their original homes.

Great tip, though, for someone who’s not a packrat like me!!

I did this with my cd collection several years ago, when I was more into spending money on music. I have about 200 cds, and they all fit into two big cd folders. It took me about 2 years to throw out the empty cases!

Glad you guys found this worthwhile! I haven’t had a problem with scratching-of course we have a rule that the kiddos aren’t allowed to take the DVDs out which probably saves them some wear and tear.

Hopefully I can catch up to FrugalBabe here and throw out the darn cases. . . .

You seem to have my exact TV viewing philosophy. I really don’t appreciate viewing that teaches children to be crude and ill-mannered… AND I love your idea! Thanks. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by my blog. I agree with your TV viewing philosophy as well. My daughter is currently on a Veggie Tales kick and we’re just getting ready to hit our local library to check out a few more. I’m growing weary of the six Veggie Tales DVDs we actually own =) Thanks for sharing your organizational tip.

    Blessings~
