Well, if the rock star were turning 7.
Yes, that’s right, Princess’s birthday is right around the corner. The last two years we’ve done Princess Parties-and I’ve managed to keep the cost around $50.
This year she wants a “Hannah Montana” party. I’ve already got some rough ideas of how to do this frugally-I’ve purchased an inexpensive Karaoke machine (which will be part of her gift-she is going to get a LOT of use out of it-she is a performer at heart-trust me), 2 cd’s for it, and some cheapo sunglasses from the dollar store (4 per pack) for them to decorate with stickers etc as a craft. I plan on making my own invitations on the computer.
I’m stuck on a good “rock star” party game and a neat cake. I’ve really wowed everyone with the Barbie birthday cakes for the last 2 years, so I’ve set the bar pretty high for myself.
Thoughts? Ideas? I know you guys are awesome and creative-I’m sure you’ll help me come up with something awesome.

Could you make microphone cupcakes by making chocolate cupcakes baked in those colored ice cream cones?
Or decorate brownies to look like ipods. Use red vines for the headphone cords.

Go to your local drug store that has the Hannah Montanna Easter baskets and candies 1/2 half off and use that stuff for the party. Walmart also has Hannah Candy by the registers and more… Good luck and Happy Birthday to her!!

Hannah Montana?

I say you need a big guitar birthday cake!

I’ve got a few ideas:
– Invite the parents to come and be ‘paparrazi.’
– If you *know someone* who has a limo, have the kids picked up from school (if party is after school)… otherwise for a ride around town.
– Miley Cyrus is big on girly-girl style, so the girls might want to play with accessories, such as chunky jewelry, scarves, hip-belts, etc. Pre-concert makeovers would go over well for a girls-only party, complete with photo shoot.
– You could decorate with hanging cds (pick up free aol cds or whatever you can get your hands on), painted cardboard cutouts of guitars, microphones, etc., and a strobe light and fog machine would be awesome for that rock-concert atmosphere. (Not sure if HM concerts do that…)
– Invitations could be done like cds, and packaged in empty cd cases or cd envelopes.
– Of course balloons, streamers, and temporary tattoos are always fun for kids.
– A simple kid-friendly menu might be chips & salsa, diy personal pizzas (on dough or english muffin halves) and of course cake & ice cream.
Here is the HM website… there’s a ‘rock star quiz’ that you might be able to use, a guide to HM onstage “look,” a downloadable one-page HM calendar (favor?) and some game ideas that I’m sure the kids would enjoy.

Green room” buffet style food”. The STAR can request her favorites. then on ‘stage” for the concert. I loved the microphone cupcake idea.

I agree with the green room food, M&M’s separated into their different colours that kind of thing. A friend of mine made a cake for her daughter (a while ago, mind you). She went for the dressing room door star, basically small cake arounf 7″ or 8″ and then a larger cake maybe around 10″, cut the larger cake into five pieces, arrange around the smaller cake pointing out and cover with bright yellow buttercream or fondant and then your daughter’s name or a message in your best “diva” scrawl across the cake. Nice and simple but her daughter thought it was just out of this world, she was the star. Plus very easy to cut and serve.

I am not at this stage yet so I don’t have any good suggestion, but all the ideas above look great. 🙂 (I am a better cheerleader than a commenter sometimes)
I love the karaoke machine! My parents got me one. Beware: house it somewhere where you don’t annoy your parents to death. I was infamous for singing using the echo effect 😉 I think they questioned why they ever got me that 😉

I think a guitar-shaped cake would be perfect!
You should definitely have them learn a song and choreography. If you know any cheerleaders or dance team members at your church or in your neighborhood, you might get them to choreograph a little something and teach it to the girls. (Unless you’re a choreographer yourself, of course!) At the end of the party, they could show off their rock star routine when the parents come to pick them up.
Or, you could have them make up their own choreography. Maybe put them in teams to compete for the best routine or something. But I don’t know if that would promote teamwork or argument, as I’m rarely around kids that age.
A headset for each girl would be awesome, but I expect that would be costly…

Hmm… a cake set up like a stage for her HM barbie to be center-stage, presumably singing?
What if you did laminated cut-outs for the rest? ie, drum set, microphones, lights in the very back? I’m not sure that I’m explaining it adequately.
Then you could simply do a stacked sheet cake. You could even make the top section a little smaller, like a stepped cake, if that makes any sense.
Elisabeth says
A stage cake?
Why not just do a flat rectangular sheet cake, two of them stacked and iced, decorated like a stage (I dunno, it might be some pale grey icing…?) And for a backdrop, you could use a few wooden dowels and anchor a backdrop you decorate to one of the long ends of the cake. The backdrop could be cardstock glued to some cardboard, hot glued to the dowels and sink the dowels into the cake.
You could probably anchor the Barbie that way too, somehow with a dowel.
I don’t know if what I’m describing makes ANY sense… I can see it clearly in my mind… lol.
Happy birthday to Princess too! 🙂
Mrs. W says
Yes! Yes, what Elizabeth said! That’s exactly what I was trying to describe.
But she said it better.

How about a guitar cake: Make two round cakes, put them side by side. Then cut a long bar of a 9×13 cake for the top of the guitar. You could use stringy licorice for the strings or something like that.
You can play “musical chairs” to H.M. music… I love the site BirthdayPartyIdeas.com; you can find “rock star” party ideas here:

I love your blog, I log on daily! Good luck with your party planning!

You guys are just great. RIght now I’m thinking of trying the stage cake, with “microphone cupcakes” using ice cream cones as a backup if the cake turns out awful. I’m going to use the idea of CD’s for decoration, and do some sort of pinata I think. . .
I’ll post a full accounting once we are done.

My daughter just went to a rock star/movie star party were they had a walk of fame with stars for all the girls to walk over as they came in (the girls names on them), they used a cheap plastic red tablecloth to make a red carpet up to the front door, put a limo service sign on the back of the car in the driveway, had fancy foods, etc. My daughter really enjoyed it.

What a great idea! I have a Hannah Montana fan at home (her name is also Hannah!). I’ve passed this on via my blog. Thanks so much!
