I love granola! (aka muesli) It is so yummy, crunchy and filling for breakfast. What I don’t love is the steep price that comes with that little tiny box you can buy at the store.
Here is a homemade version that is much cheaper, and potentially healthier since you can control exactly what goes into it! This may not be the cheapest recipe out there for breakfast, since the honey can be a bit pricy sometimes, but it is a tremendous savings when compared to store bought. Be careful of the extra “add in’s”-that can quickly take this recipe from “pretty frugal” to “overly expensive”
The recipe states raisins-you can get creative and add any kind of dried fruit or nuts that you like. Of course the more extras you add in, the higher the cost per serving.
Homemade Granola
3/4C Brown Sugar
1/3C Veg. Oil (I prefer Canola myself)
1/3C Honey
5C Oatmeal (not instant)
1/2C Dry Milk
3/4tsp Cinnamon
pinch of salt
1/2C Raisins
Heat honey, oil and sugar in a saucepan until the sugar is completely dissolved. Toss all other ingredients (minus the Raisins) together in a large bowl. Pour honey mixture over and toss well. Pour granola into a large cake pan or roasting dish and bake at 375 for 10 min.
Break up and cool. When cooled add raisins and then store in an airtight container. Raisins & dried fruit always should be added last-if they are cooked they will turn very hard & inedible.
Some additional add ins (if you can get them inexpensively):
Dried Fruit
Nuts
Coconut
Wheat Germ

That looks really good. I am going to have to try it!
Thanks for the recipe – Kitty
Instead of brown sugar, which means you have to spend time heating it up, I use molasses (I use 50/50 molasses and honey as that’s what I like, but you can adjust this). Makes it easier, and I think healthier!
Looks yummy, and I would used dried cranberries instead of the raisins, that’s the beauty of doing it your frugal self! haha
Thanks for the recipe.

This looks yum. I may get round to making a batch tomorrow. I’m bored to tears with porridge but I still have about 3kg of oatmeal in the larder.
I’m curious about how the molasses substitution tastes. Molasses is supposed to be really good for you (if it’s good enough for elephants, it’s good enough for me). I’ll have to try these recipes out!
Well I know it is tasty the way I normally make it-but I’ve never tried the molasses before. I’m out and going to make a batch in the next few days so I’ll have to try that!
Granola is one of those things that are VERY EXPENSIVE in stores – and why? I don’t know when it’s easy to make.
I have been looking for a granola recipe. It is expensive and I like it for a morning snack. i am going to have to try and make this one, looks good. yum chris
i love granola! i will have to try this out once i pick up some honey
I have a similar granola recipe that I absolutely love, thanks for the reminder! 🙂
Jenn- I have been making homemade granola and granola bars since August of 2008. I have a couple of tips- Nuts always toast them before adding(tastes better)also good dried fruit for a variety I buy the Target brand. They are inexpensive and carry a bigger variety than you would think. My fave is adding cranberries , pecans ,and white chocolate chips. I buy nut and chips when on sale or at Aldi’s for a good price.Love it on plain yogurt.-Amyrlin
I’m a little late commenting, but I make this and give it away for Christmas. My parents and in-laws LOVE it! It’s a great gift for people that don’t really need or want anything.
This recipe looks tasty! I can’t wait to try it. I also just linked to your post from the MyPunchbowl party planning blog where I wrote about online invitations for an Earth Day celebration.
