Recipe: Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers (Walmart Gameday Challenge)

September 30, 2011 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate 5 Comments

What’s your idea of a great Game-Day snack?

Every month Walmart gives me a food related challenge to share with you all here on my blog as part of the Walmart Moms.  This month’s challenge was a bit, well, challenging.

Not because I don’t like snacks-actually “snack-y” food is some of my favorite stuff.  I’d skip a meal and just eat appetizers if I had my druthers!  No, the hard part was that I have already shared most of my favorite snacks here on Frugal Upstate.  Deviled Eggs, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies, Buffalo Chicken Dip, Reuben Dip, Jello Jigglers, Biscotti, Spinach Artichoke Dip. . . what the heck was I going to write about?

So I decided to do something new. . .Bacon Wrapped Jalapeno Poppers

[amd-zlrecipe-recipe:36]

Didn’t they come out great?  And they were as tasty as they look.  Of course now everyone is going to want me to bring THESE to every party.

Your recipe looks yummy. I love these when we get them at Chili’s. I was just wondering though, the bacon on yours does not look like it is cooked enough. Is it safe to eat bacon like that?

One of my favorite appetizers, heck I just grill a fresh jalepeno and eat it unfilled! What I wanted to share with you and your readers though is a variation on these yummy treats. At a BBQ Shack my husband and I patron on occasion they have a jalepeno appetizer. The filling is cream cheese and cooked italian sweet sausage, then it is wrapped in bacon and deep fried. It is served with a habenero/mango jam (really like a chutney) delish, there is a fight in our family over who gets how much of the jelly!!! the restraunt deep frys their version, and t is bacon wrapped too!

In the BBQ community these are called Atomic Buffalo Turds – or ABT’s for short. If anyone has a meat smoker, or even a grill that can be used for indirect grilling, smoking these with a bit of mesquite or hickory adds a little extra flavor that will knock your socks off. The best part is, you can mix into the cream cheese pretty much anything you want. My staple is:

Italian sausage, red/green pepper, Onion, and cilantro.

I haven’t made them for awhile…and you’ve made me hungry. Time to fire up the smoker!

*snicker* ABT’s. . . Ok, I’m going to have to remember that! Yes, the idea of Italian sausage inside sounds delish!
