Ahhh, Annie! We lived and breathed Annie last year when Princess was cast in our high school musical version (as a 7th grader!). She played Molly, the spunky youngest orphan who makes fun of Mrs. Hannigan. Of course in preparation for the show we watched the classic 1982 version that I grew up with, and then I saw my baby girl perform every night.

There’s Princess getting her hair brushed by Mrs Hannigan.
When Walmart offered us a chance to watch and write about the 2014 remake of Annie we were all excited to watch it and see the differences. Walmart sent us a copy of their exclusive Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital box set with a special plush Sandy ($24.96), and a copy of the Annie Soundtrack!

They also included some fun Annie themed coloring pages, games and sing along sheets–and you can download all those same free Annie printables yourself.
The new version of Annie brings the story out of the Great Depression and into the modern day. Annie is a foster kid instead of an orphan, and lives with Miss Hannigan (along with several other foster kids) in modern day NYC. She was abandoned at 4 years old by her parents, but they left her with a locket, a note and a clue which leads her to wait on the curb by a particular Italian restaurant every Friday hoping they will appear. Spunky and adventurous, one day she runs into (physically!) Mr Stacks–a uber rich and disagreeable business man who is running for mayor. He pulls her out of the street just as a car whizzes by. Someone catches it on film and his flagging polls rise at this sign of humanity and heroism. That leads to him taking Annie in as a Foster child to improve his image (with her full knowledge and cooperation).  Of course her indomitable spirit wins him over. . .
This is a musical, and it has the bones of all your favorite Annie songs revamped and renovated for the modern day.
To turn our family viewing part for Annie into a bit more of a celebration I decided to make a special snack. The iconic song for Annie is of course “Tomorrow” with it’s line “The Sun will come out, tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow. . .they’ll be sun”. . . So I whipped up some “Sunshine Pineapple Shakes” to eat while we watched.

These shakes were simple to make. You just need to grab some vanilla ice cream, crushed pineapple and milk from your local Walmart. I also added a bit of yellow food coloring and some yellow sprinkles on top. . . just for pretty 🙂

Each large shake is made with 1 cup of ice cream, 1/2 cup of milk and about 7 oz or so of crushed pineapple (roughly 1/3 of a 20oz can). I added a drop of yellow food coloring to amp up the “sunshine”. Blend well with a stick blender, or use a regular blender.

This makes a large shake, or two small shakes, depending on how much snack you are in the mood for!

When you watch Annie, why not whip up your own Sunshine Pineapple Shakes?
