Back to School Fashion (and Uniforms) at Walmart

I admit it, I don’t think “fashion” when I think Walmart.  Sure–you can get basics there. . . but “on trend” items aren’t what I expect to find.

Believe it or not, Walmart’s fashion team has been working HARD on that.  When were went down this spring to visit Walmart HQ in Bentonville Arkansas, we met with the fashion team to specifically hear about the back to school fashions that were planned for Fall 2013.  It was so interesting to hear them talk about the upcoming trends, what is popular for the various age groups, and the improvements in fabric quality that they have been working on.

Walmart asked me to share some of what I learned with all of you since we are in the “back to school” mood around here.  Yes, I know, my kids went back to school last week (and many of yours went back WEEKS ago)–but I’ll let you in on a little secret.  I don’t do my “back to school” clothing shopping until a few weeks in to school

Yup, that’s me, bucking the system.

You see, at this time of year here in Upstate NY–all the stuff in the stores is still geared more to late summer rather then winter.  Sure, you can get jeans–but just TRY to find a long sleeve top or a sweater?  Not going to happen.  That stuff rolls out a bit later.  And actually–that’s ok.  The kids wind up wearing shorts to school for the first several weeks until the weather flips anyway.  And if you have a fashion conscious young lady in the house (and I do) it never hurts to have them get a feel for what the “in” styles are at school BEFORE you start shelling out the cash for them!

Now I did not take many photos while we were talking to the Fashion folks–but luckily my awesome friend Monica from Mommy Brain Reports did–and she generously agreed to share them with me.  So thanks to Moni for all the beautiful shots you’ll see in this post.

First let’s talk about uniforms.  That’s right you can get uniform pieces at Walmart!  They have very basic polos, slacks and such that are suitable for most school uniforms.  The quality is decent and the price is right. If you shop online you can get some great deals–like a selection of uniform value bundles–Here’s an example:  5 polos and 2 pants for $36!!

Now let’s start move on to the boys.  Here’s a selection of the up and coming boys clothes that will be available in Walmart this fall.  Notice that the top photo shows some of those uniform pieces.

I especially like that they have jeans for boys and teens in a variety of washes–from dark to faded.  And the slightly heathered tees with a v neck were handsome and would work for most boys regardlesss of style.

The girls stuff is more fun.  Face it–girls clothes always are!  Take a look at the variety of styles available.  I love how they put together the different outfits on the manequins for both teens and girls.  I swear–I could see the exact same items in the store and I’d never think of putting them together that way.

Walmart Back to School Fashion for Girls

I particularly love some of the little touches–like the lace on the bottom of the tank tops.  The touches of glitter.  Plaid (which is supposed to be hot this year).  The infinity scarf.

Now be honest–if I had shown you these pictures and hadn’t told you they were clothes and accessories from Walmart, would you have ever guessed?
