Writing with chocolate? That sounds like my kind of project! Walmart will be selling the new Candy Craft Chocolate Pen soon, and they asked me if I’d like to try one out.

So what is the Chocolate Pen? Well this is a fun toy for kids to use to make edible treats! The box says 6+, but I’d say this appeals most to the 9-12 age group. You will need to provide assembly and supervision for the younger set, but it is remarkably clean compared to most melted chocolate experiences I’ve had.

The Candy Craft Chocolate Pen comes with the pen itself, 4 packages of chocolate (1/2 lb total), tips/clamps/stoppers, 3 sheets of candy molds (over 50 designs) and a few plastic gift bags and ties.
The chocolate is specific to this product, and can be melted in a glass of hot tap water. That means you don’t need to bust out the double boiler or fiddle around with a microwave in 10 second intervals. I just filled a travel coffee mug up with our hottest tap water and then popped the chocolate inside.

When it’s softened you cut the top off, insert the tip and use the clamp to hold it together. The included instructions give very clear instructions with drawings. There are a few tips to getting the clamps to close. Before you cut your bag open at the top, trim the plastic along the side for an inch or so as close as you can without cutting it open (that’s down along the left side of the chocolate package in the picture above). Then when you put the tip inside the bag and get ready to shut the clamp you have to pull the plastic tight and sort of fold it over flat where it has to overlap. If you just try to bunch it up under the clamp it is not going to work.
Once you’ve got the tip on, squeeze from the bottom to get the air out and then stick the stopper in. Then you fold it up a bit and insert it in the pen. The pen does take 2 AA batteries (not included) and is pretty easy to load and put together. Just follow the instructions.

The chocolate is pretty thin and runny, so be careful. One of the other Walmart Moms who tried the pen out suggested putting the entire pen into the freezer for 2 minutes to thicken it up some. I didn’t try that myself, but I could see where it would be a good idea.

You press down on the button and the pen squeezes the chocolate out for you. You don’t need to hold the button down the entire time, and chocolate will continue to come out for a few seconds after you let up on the button, so plan accordingly.

My kids (and a spare–we had Princess’s best friend over) had a hard time with the freehand, but really enjoyed filling up the molds. The teenage girls in particular thought the designs for the molds were very cute.
Everyone agreed that the quality of the chocolate was higher than we expected–quite tasty in fact.
The Candy Craft Chocolate Pen retails for $29.93 at Walmart. You will be able to purchase chocolate refills (you can’t use your own chocolate–you need it to be in the plastic tube).
If you are looking for an item to help you make masses of chocolates easily for Christmas gifts or something like that, this is not the right tool for you. It’s really not even a tool–it’s a toy, a fun activity. Think more along the lines of an Easy Bake Oven. You aren’t going to bake your wedding cake in an Easy Bake Oven. You are going to have your kids have a fun time using it and wind up with an edible treat at the end. The teens I had helping me spent an enjoyable 45 minutes or so making the chocolates and goofing off, then had the chocolates later as a treat.
