Creative Recreation for Kids

Welcome to week 6 of the MVP Generation Go posts here on Frugal Upstate!  As you know we’ve discussed Meal Planning, Kids and Youth Sports,  Active Role Models, Discovering Your Community and Making Food Fun.  This week’s MVP Generation Go topic for all of us ambassadors is Creative Recreation!

The goal of MVP Healthcare’s  MVP Generation Go program is to encourage families to live a healthy, active lifestyle.  While youth sports are a great way to get active, there are other creative ways to keep your whole family moving without signing up for little league or a sports clinic.

1.  Walk.

Get out in your backyard, neighborhood or park and take a walk or a hike.  How is that creative?  Well you can turn it into a rousing game of Nature Bingo and watch your kids tear around trying to find all the items on their cards.

If you’ve got older kids (and a GPS or GPS function on your phone) you can turn your walk/hike into a chance to try out GeoCaching–sort of like a world wide treasure hunt folks do for fun.  Who knows, maybe it will turn into a new hobby!

2.  Roll.

If walking isn’t your style, why not have the kids hop on a bike, scooter, roller skates, skateboard or roller blades?  Take a spin around the block, head to a park with trails, go to an indoor rink or find an actual skate park.

Want to make it even more fun?  How about getting creative and playing some games?  Livestrong.com has 5 ideas for great roller skate games, and in my research I found the official US Bicycle Polo page. . .and of course you can organize races, relay races and more!

3.  Splash.

Water never seems to lose it’s allure-even for the teens!  There are plenty of creative ways to splash your way into some fun this summer.  Of course you can go swimming–but everyone does THAT.  What about creating your own backyard water park for the kids?

Or making your own inexpensive version of the “Best Slip ‘n Slide Ever” for the teens?

Those are just a few creative ways you can get out there and get moving!  Now it’s time for you to share your ideas and–as a bonus–be entered to win a $50 gift card courtesy of Kids Fun Plaza!

This giveaway starts today, August 1st and ends at midnight EST on Sunday August 7th.  Winners will be announced next Monday.

To enter, we would like to know what your favorite fun snack is for your kids!

For an additional entry you can:

Tweet your ideas about how to get out and get active using the #GenerationGo hashtag (one entry).

Don’t forget to head on over to the MVP Generation Go Facebook page andgive them a “like”! You’ll see all the great posts by the other Ambassadors-and to see their gift card giveaways as well!

My favorite fun snack for my kids is jello with bits of fruit inside, like grapes or blueberries.

Favorite fun snack is fruit, yogurt and frozen yogurt (sweetened with jam) Popsicle in our Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck Popsicle holders from when I was a little girl!

And we love being outside in the summer when it isn’t over 100 degrees…playing is what my kiddos do best these days 🙂

Our favorite fun snack is definitely fruit smoothies, I always sneak some veggies in though. Kids love blueberries with Greek yogurt and lemon/lime smoothies.

My kids love trail mix (also called Gorp) – mix together popcorn, pretzels, raisins, peanuts, mini marshmallows, dried fruit like cranberries, and/or anything else you like. It is easy to carry with you in little baggies.
