Fall Cornucopia with Silk Flowers

How do you decorate for fall?  I like to start out with some harvest themed items, then transition into Halloween, then back to the harvest theme for Thanksgiving.  If you choose right, you can get some items that will look lovely and seasonal from mid September all the way through till the end of November!

“Silk” flowers are great for that kind of decorating.  They look so lovely and stay beautiful for years. Years ago I made myself a wreath for the front door out of gorgeous orange, red and gold flowers to use for the fall, but I’ve been wanting to make something for inside to go on my big double mantle in the den.  Luckily Walmart asked me to do a project highlighting their beautiful floral selections–it gave me the incentive I needed to finally make my Fall Cornucopia!

Silk Flower Cornucopia

Isn’t it pretty?  I’m so pleased with how it turned out.  I started of course with silk floral selections from Walmart.  Now if you’ve never checked them out, Walmart has some really nice stuff!  The florals are not back with the craft supplies, but instead are near the home decor items.  My store has 2 aisles dedicated to them!  There are tons of great vases and containers (like the wire basket and glass bowl I found last year for my Thanksgiving Centerpiece) , decorator “sprays”, including the cool light up branches like I used last year for my Fall Mantle Decor, Foam, floral tape, wire cutters, ribbons and more!

I chose two sets of flowers in fall colors.  I particularly liked these because they had the fall leaves, both the “realistic” type and some shimmery metallic ones.  Honestly–you could have just popped one or both of these in a vase and had a lovely arrangement-

Silk Flowers

Honestly–you could have just popped one or both of these in a vase and had a lovely arrangement-but I had my heart set on a cornucopia.  You know what?  Those aren’t as easy to find as you might think!  I was feeling a bit lazy and would have loved a nice premade one. . .that wasn’t happening so I had to get all crafty.

Materials for Cornucopia Arrangement

For my project I used the flowers, of course, some foam, a bit of chicken wire (about a 2’X2′ piece–leftover from a theater project last year), a paper bag and some Mod Podge.

To make the cornucopia you start by using some wire cutters to cut your chicken wire.  Then you bend, twist, mangle and otherwise fight with it until you get an adequate cornucopia shape.

Making the Cornucopia

To cover the form I used a brown paper bag.  You could also head on over to the stationary department and buy a roll of brown paper, or to the fabric department and pick up either some burlap or some burlap ribbon.

I didn’t want the paper to be smooth, so I crumpled it up an then smoothed it back out for a better texture.  Then I wrapped it around the form.  At first I tried using a glue stick to secure things–but that wasn’t going to work at all.  Instead I used a healthy coating of Mod Podge (the crafter’s friend!) That gave the paper a bit more body and a pretty shine.  If I was going to do this again, I’d probably cut the paper in strips and Mod Podge it on in sections instead of trying to wrap the whole thing first.

Anyway–once the cornucopia was done, I cut my floral foam and set it inside.  Then I used my wire cutters (you can use the ones from the hardware section or the ones they sell right there by the floral supplies) to separate the flowers and started arranging them in the foam.  I started placing the large flowers so that I could distribute the colors and then filled in with the smaller items and leaves.  I made sure to use some berries both high and low to add some interest.
