Everyone knows Fiskars! Their orange handled scissors are a staple in craft and sewing rooms around the country–and their gardening shears and pruners grace many a shed. Who would have thought that they’ve been around for 365 years?!?
The company was founded way back in 1649 in Fiskars, Finland. To put that into context–the first Thanksgiving here in America was in 1621. That’s a company with a long, long history. The scissors that we know and love were invented over 130 years ago–although at that point they didn’t have the distinctive orange handles. Those came on the scene in 1967. . . they used extra plastic in the molding machine that was also used for orange juicer production. They held a vote on the color and keeping the orange won by a mere 2 votes. Imagine–if two folks had thought differently this iconic brand would look completely different.
I grew up with my mom having her “good” Fiskar scissors in the sewing room. Woe betide any of us kiddos if we even THOUGHT of using those scissors to cut paper or anything else. Those were the GOOD SEWING scissors, kept sharp and nick free specifically for the task of cutting fabric. Now I have my own pair, and have laid down the law with my own kiddos–the Fiskar’s sewing scissors are just for my sewing!

I was so excited to get these pruners, as I’ve planted a lot of things that require a bit of pruning on my little 1/2 acre Frugal Village Homestead in the last year.
The two year old peach and pear trees and the elderberry bushes will all get pruned in late winter/early spring. The brambles (my black raspberries–which actually are wild volunteers, and my raspberry canes which I planted) can all get pruned in the fall. The black raspberry in particular wants to take over the whole garden, so I’m glad to just hack away at the arching canes. They are thick though–in the past I’ve used pruners that I had to kind of shut half way and then wiggle back and forth to sort of saw through the canes. These Fiskars pruners did the trick easily and quickly–just a snip straight through! I really liked how well they worked, and I am vowing to take good care of them–as good a care as I do with my Fiskars sewing scissors–so that I can use them for many years.
