Is learning to can on your list of “Things to Do” in 2014? Well then I’ve got a giveaway for you!
That’s right, to get you going on your home food preservation adventures one lucky reader will receive a Ball Fresh Preserving Kit from Jarden!
So what’s in the Ball Fresh Preserving Kit?
- 21-quart water bath canner (enamel coated steel base)
- chrome plated canning rack
- canning jar lifter
- lid lifter
- canning funnel
- bubble remover and head space tool (not shown)
It’s everything you need to start boiling water bath canning (a $60 value). . . except for the jars and food.
And because I don’t want you heading into this adventure blind, I asked the folks at Ball to throw in a copy of their Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving! Of course you can also check out my relevant tutorials to get you started on your canning journey as well (psst–I’ve got some tips in the before and after canning session posts you won’t find in the Blue Book!):
Ball also sent me their Ball Canning Discovery Kit to check out. This is a VERY basic kit (at a very basic price–around $12) that is basically a basket that will fit in your average stock pot, 3 jars and some small scale recipes. This is a nice kit for someone who is not quite sure if they are interested in canning–a low cost entry point that uses a pot you already own. I have to admit, when I first saw it last year I though “what’s the point of making only 3 jars?”–but upon reflection I realized that you don’t have to do everything in bulk. Some folks only want a few jars of a specific type of jam , jelly, pickles or salsa–or only have enough fruit/vegetable to make a small batch. (and it would be just the size to fit a batch of jam from a Freshtech automatic jam maker. . . )
Now on to the giveaway–Good Luck!

I want to can Chicken Soup but so far I have been scared!
Jenn @ Frugal Upstate says
Margot–this kit wouldn’t be used for Chicken soup–you’d need a pressure canner for that. But there are plenty of delicious things you CAN can in a boiling water bath–basically any kind of fruit, jam, syrup, pickle, tomato product etc.

Would love this! I need to preserve more in jars and use freezer less.
