It’s back! That’s right, the Lay’s brand is once again asking fans across the country to submit their ideas for the next great potato chip flavor! Sure, we all love LAY’S® Classic Potato Chips, but it’s also nice to spice things up a bit–like last year’s Wasabi Ginger chips (Yum!). Four finalist flavors from across the country will be fully developed and brought to store so that America can vote on their favorite. . . then someone out there is going to win a $1 million grand prize.
Why not take a chance and enter YOUR flavor. Don’t worry–You don’t have to be a chef or a foodie to come up with a great flavor idea. We all eat food and know what we like–just trust your taste buds!
This time around there is also an exciting new twist to your submission–not only do you pick a flavor (giving 3 main ingredients), the type of chip it should go on and the inspiration behind your idea (a good story counts here!)–you also include the location that inspired the idea.
I think that makes a lot of sense–certain flavors are just tied to certain locations aren’t they? I’m sure if you think for a minute you will be able to come up with some immediate food/place combinations. Lobster from Maine. Hot Dogs in NYC. Deep Dish Pizza in Chicago.
To show you how different locations can inspire food choices, the Lay’s brand invited some of the Walmart Moms to fly down to the Frito Lay Flavor Kitchen at the Frito Lay Headquarters in Plano Tx. What a great time!
Not only did I get to see some of my favorite bloggers, but we all spent the day with Frito- Lay Chef Jody Denton. Each one of us shared some recipes that bring to mind a special place for us. They even made wonderful videos with us!
Are you wondering what I shared?
Well for my hometown of Binghamton, New York I shared Spiedies, a super local meat dish. As a matter of fact, we have a Spiediefest each year in August! Spiedies are chunks of pork, chicken, pork or venison that you soak in a special marinade for several days and then grill. It’s not quite Italian, not quite Greek, just all it’s own dish. Folks from the area argue over who makes the best Spiedies and family recipes are a guarded secret!
Another dish I shared was one that has a strong association with visiting my sisters in Texas. Upstate New York where I live is not known for it’s Mexican or Tex-Mex food. That’s a shame because it’s a cuisine I enjoy. Down in Texas where two of my sisters live there are lots of great places for Mexican. While tacos and burritos are good, what I really love is some juicy, slightly crispy pork. . . Carnitas!
See how easy it is to let a location inspire your food? Maybe it’s a special dish your home town is known for, or something delicious you had on vacation. I just bet you have a great idea for a chip flavor in you!
