Christmas gifts are both wonderful and sometime stressful. I love receiving gifts and I love choosing gifts for the people I know well. What I find awful is trying to choose gifts for that person you don’t really know but are obliged to get something for, for the person who is super picky, and for that person who already has everything they want or need and genuinely doesn’t want anything.
Arrggghhh! Those folks are the difficult ones. I’ve personally tried to eliminate as many of the difficult to shop for people from my life as possible. . . I simply don’t exchange gifts with friends or acquaintances, don’t give gifts to the kids teachers or the hairdresser. There are still a few left however.
Now I’ve talked about American Home by Yankee Candles (at Walmart!) a couple of times. I shared that the brand had come to Walmart, and I showed how having a Yankee Candle in your guest bathroom was a good way to make visitors feel welcome. Now it’s time to talk about using some of those candles as gifts this holiday season!
Candles make a great gift. Many people like them (and they are very re-giftable if they don’t!), they are inexpensive, and they come in a variety of colors and scents. In the case of Yankee Candles you also wind up with a nice jar you can reuse in many ways.
So how do you gift them? Well, let’s start with a candle. I particularly like the smell of the Fresh Apple for a wide range of folks–it isn’t too flowery for the guys, and it seems appropriate for most rooms in the house. Fresh and fruity. Plus I just love the red color.
Now the American Home by Yankee Candle in Fresh Apple shown here is the largest size–19oz. That will run you about $14.93. The smaller sizes (12oz, 40z, votive and wax cubes) cost comparably less.
Of course you could just hand someone the jar and say “Merry Christmas”. . . but that isn’t much fun. Don’t worry though, you don’t have to do much to dress it up for the holidays. I just took some curling ribbon (I have a big spool of red and of green that I bought in the Party aisle at Walmart for a couple bucks each), tied it around the top of the jar and curled it up.
Instant pretty!
If you want your recipient to be a bit more surprised about the gift then you can pick up a gift bag and some tissue paper. Just pop the candle inside, fluff a piece of tissue paper, shove it on top of the candle and viola!
A simple gift, simple to give. If you have someone who is hard to shop for but needs a bit more (or just someone who loves candles) you can always put your American Home candle into a gift basket. I decided to create a themed basket around snuggling up on the sofa to read a good book.
I started with a fun chicken wire basket from Walmart’s floral and craft section. I knew I wanted my Fresh Apple candle and a snuggly throw–there are such super soft blankets at Walmart right now! I chose a Better Homes and Garden Velvet Plush Throw (with sherpa on the other side!) in a red, black and gray plaid that even the boys wouldn’t be ashamed to be seen snuggled up under. Of course you need a book-so I grabbed a romance by Mary Jo Putney (I like her historical romances–and hey, the cover matched my basket theme). While you are indulging in a good book, why not indulge in a bit of chocolate? A couple of candy bars are tucked in for that sweet tooth. Finally I took some matching tissue paper and fluffed and tucked all around.
There you have it–a beautiful and useful themed basket! Substitute some other book in for the romance (maybe a spy or mystery) and you can gift it to a man without even having to change the color scheme.
