Walmart Foodsaver Challenge

Guess what I got to try out a while back?  A brand new FoodSaver!  What’s a FoodSaver you ask?  Well it’s a home vacuum sealing unit:

Why would you want such a thing?  Because it makes your food last much, much longer!  If you vacuum seal something before freezing it, then you get NO freezer burn (freezer burn is caused by air touching an item-if you vaccuum out all the air, well, it can’t touch your food!).  Also if you vacuum seal food before refriderating it, it lasts 4-5 times longer!

Less freezer burn and food that lasts longer in the fridge means less food thrown out. .. and throwing out food is one of my biggest anti-frugal pet peeves.  You paid for that food, you should get to eat it!

Now I’ve had a Foodsaver for years because I do consider it a true frugal living asset-my original counter top model has gotten quite a workout, especially during the harvest and hunting season.

Here you can see me sealing up ground venison back in the fall of 2007 with my original white FoodSaver.

And remember when I showed you those pictures of the inside of my freezer during the “Putting Up the Harvest” post a few weeks back?

All that squash and all the sauce up on that top shelf were vacuum sealed with my FoodSaver! (note-for the sauce you freeze it in a container first THEN you seal the frozen block of food)

So anyway, you can tell just guess how excited I was to get a newer model and see what kinds of changes they’ve made.  Especially since they sent us the cadillac version-the FoodSaver V3425–upright, hands free, moisture sensing etc etc etc!  Woohoo!

The biggest change I noticed, besides the sleek and shiny black color, is that this is an upright model-which means it takes up less space on your counter!  It’s also got the internal compartment to keep a roll of the bags in, and a special bag slicer/cutter thing. . . you’ll see more of that in the video.

Video? What video?  Well, you see this here is a challenge.

Foodsaver and Walmart asked me, along with the rest of the Walmart Moms, to see how much money we could save using the Foodsaver.  I’ve been using it for a while now and have a few more days before I can finish up my quick video on the unit and tell you all about my results!  So be looking forward to that!

I love our food saver! I also discovered that the other bags, like the seal a meal bags seem to work as well in the food saver. they sometimes have bags in different sizes that the saver doest have, or are out of. Have you tried any other bags or rolls? do you make you own bags or buy them? I am on the fence since with mine i have to cut them, then seal the one side then can use. it is sometimes time i dont have.

I love my FoodSaver. I used it just this past weekend when I was packing up my chicken breasts from Zaycon Foods.

Check out my giveaway for Zaycon Foods (http://katsdailyinspiration.blogspot.com/2011/11/zaycon-foods-giveaway.html) I got 40 lbs of Boneless/Skinless Chicken Breasts (at $1.49/lb). My giveaway would cover that AND leave a little left for their next event.
