We are back at the Victorian Pharmacy this week for TV Thursday!
If you didn’t catch them, make sure you also watch Victorian Pharmacy Episode 1 and Victorian Pharmacy Episode 2. As a reminder, this 4 episode series is by the makers of the Wartime Farm series and features Ruth Goodman as the domestic/lifestyle specialist along with pharmacy professor Nick Barber and doctorate student Tom Quick as the pharmacy experts.
In the third episode, the team is in 1868, which is when pharmacies in England became regulated by law for the very first time.  The team has to try taking the extensive exams (knowledge and hands on) that pharmacists were required to master for qualification–although Ruth as a non professional is given a bit of help.  Although the pharmacists were beginning to be regulated, there were still many substances such as arsenic, opium and even explosives which were not restricted!  The team acts as “Experimental Chemists” and produce a wide range of products, from gelatin and cosmetics to matches and fireworks!  They even put on a Victorian style fireworks display.
