Tax Podcast and Software Giveaway by H&R Block

Last year H&R Block asked me to help host a special tax webinar to help answer tax questions from bloggers and small business owners at the end of March.

“So sorry!” most of you said “I’ve already completed my taxes for the year.”

ACK!  Obviously you all are much better organized than I am.

Tax Time

This year I’m helping H&R Block host a podcast (that’s an audio recording) instead.  We are doing it a bit earlier in hopes that we can help more people.  The podcast format is a change too-not only will folks be able to listen, call in and chat live for the show, but it will be available for download later, so you can listen again at your leisure.

The show will run live at 10 am EST on Wednesday February 23rd on Blog Talk Radio.

I’ll be posting the link to the show page both here and in a stand alone post soon.

But that is not all!

To help folks get excited for the event (and who would have thought you could get excited about taxes) I have TWO copies of the H&R Block At Home Premium tax software to give away!  This software is especially made for the Self Employed/Rental Property Owners, and retails for $64.95!

I guess everyone else is more organized than I am too!! 🙂
Here’s my question: if a small business person was a sole proprietor for part of the year, but then either stops working OR starts a new business (under an LLC) that is different from the first – how will s/he let the IRS know on his/her tax return that even though s/he is self-employed, there is a period where s/he is unemployed OR where s/he is self-employed but under an LLC for a different type of company?

My question is how to report income. I know. I’m that clueless. I started helping some moms in my neighborhood get their home-based businesses up and running with social media. I meet with a few of them every week and they pay me. Do I need to have paperwork sent to them for the work I did Oct-Dec? And what about for next year? WHAT am I supposed to be tracking? And what I report what I made, but they don’t report that they paid me?

So you see, it’s not that I wasn’t interested in winning the software. It’s that I’m utterly embarrassed that I need Business 101. : /

I mentioned this giveaway on my personal FB profile (tagged the Frugal Upstate page in the upate, but it won’t show in your feed b/c of my privacy settings; you should get a notification that I tagged the page, though). AND I shared it before I even knew that would get me more entries. 😉

My question has to do with my husband’s small business. He is a children’s performer and is playing in many different states this summer. We have heard that we need to file income taxes with each of the different states and then somehow deduct what we pay to them from our WI taxes. I’d love clarification on this!

Pint Size Polkas (remember the review and giveaway you did a few years ago) is going so well! He has released a second album and is playing everywhere from GA (for 2 weeks straight) to MO to IL and 3 other states this summer. We won’t see Daddy much during the summer, but we are so pleased with the success!

I am really excited about the tax podcast and I will be downloading. I have just started an at home daycare and feel pretty overwhelmed with appropriate tax deductions. I am hoping to learn more during the podcast. Thank you!

    Question:
As I am trying to line up business expenses, would it be okay to list as a tax write off
my membership in a particular gym if the only reason I’m keeping it is because the owner is a client & it helps business? ( I recently joined another gym & thought it would be silly to let go of the other membership since It helps my business if I talk to pp about my weight loss business at the gym while, working out etc

    My question:

We moved last year and have been trying to rent out our old home, but it has not yet rented. Can we claim the expenses on that property (mortgage, power, water) as a business loss on our taxes, or do we have to wait until we have tenants?
