Recipe: Cola Wings

Two weeks ago we had a party at the house.  Instead of buying lots of cans of soda I used the big 2 liter bottles-much more frugal!  However I now have 3 partially finished bottles of cola (Pepsi, Coke & Diet Pepsi) slowly going flat on top of my fridge.

Waste is never frugal.

So I dug out my “Cola Wings” recipe to use up some of the excess.  It sounds like an odd combination, but believe me-it’s delicious!  These wings would be great to serve up as a snack for your Superbowl Party or any other sporting event.

Cola Flavored Wings

Cola Wings

1C brown sugar
12 oz Cola
1 Onion
2tsp Garlic Powder
2TBS Soy Sauce
3 lbs Chicken Wings
Salt & Pepper

Dice onion & combine with brown sugar, cola, garlic powder, & soy sauce. Mix till combined.
Layer chicken wings in a large casserole & pour sauce over.
Bake at 350 for 2 hours.

Variations:

Remove wings from sauce & use 1TBS cornstarch dissolved in 2 TBS of water (or cola) to thicken the sauce.

Use frozen, undefrosted wings and extend cooking time. (this will require some checking-I’d guess 30 min to an hour extra)

Use ribs, chunks of chicken or pork instead of the wings. Just remember, you want more surface area for the sauce to stick to.

Cook in a crockpot for 4-6 hours on low instead of the oven.

Use diet cola

Substitute 2 cloves of minced garlic for the garlic powder.

Going to have to try this. I usually use left over soda to make a glaze for ham. The sticky-sweet of the soda is perfect for glazes!
