As you all know, I’m hosting a giveaway of ELF makeup products right now. I was very concerned when I got the following comment from my reader Laura:
I ordered about 65 pieces of ELF makeup last fall. They sent out a campaign regarding all makeup pieces for $1. They said they were being purchased by Nordstrom, and were liquidating current packaging in inventory. I have never received such junk in the mail. The makeup was terrible quality, and I would NEVER reccommend purchasing any of this makeup. They had no options for a return of course. I recommend steering clear of this company all together.
This surprised me~I’ve seen lots of magazine articles touting ELF as being just as good as the expensive brands, and although I’ve only used a few of their products myself I have many online friends who love their stuff.
So I contacted the company to give them Laura’s feedback, express my concern and see what was up.
ELF wrote me back almost immediately! Here is the reply:
I am so please there is so much interest here in e.l.f. Cosmetics. Over the past 18 months some have received an email that’s been circulating around stating that we have an affiliation with Nordstrom. We currently are not affiliated with Nordstrom, never have been, and we are unaware of the origin of that email and its beginnings. Nordstrom has cleared e.l.f. of any involvement and even states that on their website. We sincerely apologize for the confusion and any inconvenience this may have caused anyone. Rest assured that we are a legitimate company, that has been in business for over five years, and was co-founded by Celebrity and Beauty Professional Scott-Vincent Borba. Please log on to our website at http://www.eyeslipsface.com/tab_buzz.asp and read about us in the various magazines we have been featured in such as Oprah, Allure, Elle, Marie Claire, Good Housekeeping and Lucky. Please feel free to contact me personally with any questions… trubin@eyeslipsface.com. We invite you to try our amazing products and hope that you love them as much as we do. Because our philosophy is simple… why pay more if you don’t have to.
Sincerely, Ted Rubin
Chief Marketing Officer
So there you have it. Apparently this scam has been around since 2006~or at least that is what my research on Snopes brought up. (see e.l.f. cosmetics)
Laura-I am so sorry that you were the victim of a scam, but rest assured that the ELF studio makeup kit is of higher quality than what you received. Ted assured me that he would reach out to you personally to make sure that any other questions you have are answered.

Jenn… thanks so much for giving e.l.f. the opportunity to respond. We are very proud of our products and track record. Any of your readers should absolutely feel free to contact me personally.
e.l.f. was named a ‘cosmetics line that lets you go crazy without going broke’ in Oprah magazine.
It’s simply elfonomics… Why Pay More?
Laura~I tried to contact you this morning directly~the email that you used when making your comment came back as not existing. You must have made a typo by accident! Please send me your email address (use the contact me tab at the top of the page so you don’t get a ton of spam from bots fishing for email addresses!)
So sorry Laura had a bad experience! I have, and lots of my friends have, experienced nothing but great things from ELF. The make-up is fantastic and the price can’t be beat. The eyeliner is very professional…reminds me of the lancome liner I used to foolishly buy when I knew I couldn’t afford it.
