It’s time to talk about Walmart’s Meal Solutions again! This is the segment where I tell you what meal Walmart is highlighting for a quick and easy weeknight meal.  Look for the “Tonight’s Menu” signage at your local Walmart so you can just grab & go with the things you need to make this meal:

Thanksgiving Sides Meal Solution

Bruce Cut Yams, 40 oz  $1.98
Jet Puffed Mini Marshmallows, 10.5oz $.84
Great Value Light Brown Sugar, 2lbs $1.58

Del Monte Cut Green Bean 14.5oz $.67
French Fried Onions, 6oz
Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup, 10.34oz

Ocean Spray Cranberry Sauce, 16oz $.88

While of course Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the turkey, we all know that in reality-it’s all about the side dishes.  I mean honestly-how different does turkey taste from chicken?  But really homemade mashed potatoes, creamy green bean casserole, cranberry sauce (jellied or homemade relish), moist fresh stuffing and sweet potato casserole. . . well, those are more than just your run of the mill “veggie and starch” options.  We really tend to pull out all the stops and make Thanksgiving a true feast!

Every family (and dare I say every family member) has their own ideas about what MUST be on the dinner table come Thanksgiving afternoon.  A few weeks ago I told you all that my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes were my grandmother’s sausage stuffing and the tiny creamed onions that my mom used to make.  Princess told me that she loves the turkey skin (of course!) and the butternut squash made with plenty of butter and a good sized drizzle of maple syrup.  Buddy waxed ecstatic about the mashed potatoes (I rarely make them from scratch).  Yankee Bill grew up with the tradition of having scalloped oysters on the dinner table and a shrimp cocktail to tide everyone over while the turkey finished cooking.

But what if you had to pick one thing to get rid of?

What one item would you not shed a tear for if it disappeared from the lineup?

For me it’s the mincemeat pie.

Blech.  Sorry you mincemeat lovers out there-I just don’t  understand why folks like that stuff.  I can eat it, if there is nothing else around, but there are so many pie flavors that taste so much better!

If I had to pick something from the dinner table itself I think I’d pick rolls.

Don’t get me wrong, I love rolls.  Usually I am all about the bread!  But I can eat bread anytime.   There are so many other dishes on the table that are special, once a year type things. . .so I’d swap out the bread in order to keep the stuffing, or mashed potatoes anytime!

What items do you love most for Thanksgiving?  What could you do without?

Disclosure: This post is part of a series of Meal Solutions with Walmart that some of my fellow Walmart Moms (Heather of Domestic Diva, Denise of Wholesome Mommy, and Lori at My Wooden Spoon) and I are participating in. Agree x 1000 about the creamed onions. They were my mom’s Thanksgiving tradition, as well as winter squash cooked with LOTS of butter, salt and pepper, and a little onion.

I also agree about rolls – who needs ’em with all the other lovely starches – and about mince pie. Until I came to the UK, I did NOT like mince pie. Here, you NEVER see a giant pie. They are always little tartlets, about 2″ across, and that, my friend, is a much more manageable serving of mince pie 🙂

Susie-Hmmm. if it was just a dab of mincemeat inside of some lovely buttery crust, well, I think I could manage that much better! I have a recipe for Green Tomato Mincemeat that I may try some day if I get a glut of end of the season Green Tomatoes. . .

I would personally forgo the canned cranberry jelly that is in the shape of the can (I am not giving up the King’s Hawaiian rolls LOL!) I only eat a 1 simple plate of what is being offered (with the exception of oyster stuffing, love oysters but not in my stuffing eww!) so I do not count calories or try to trade carbs except for not wanting to be overful from one item. I also only choose 1 desert or half of a piece and anther half piece, then I try to end it there. I do like the idea about deserts in a tartlet form. I may need to keep on the look out for a pan!
