Giveaway: Family Game Night Gift Certificate

September 25, 2009 By Jenn @ Frugal Upstate

game-nightRemember a few weeks ago when I posted “5 Ways Family Game Night Can Be Frugal Fun”?  Well obviously Walmart & Hasbro agree!  They have created Family Game Night Centers in the Walmart stores to help you put together your own Family Game Night for under $40.

Walmart offered the ElevenMoms the opportunity to create our very own theme night for $40 or less. Some ideas included:

Example 1: Rock n’Roll Night

Turn your living room into a 50’s diner for Rock n’ Roll Night. The family could play include Twister, watch one of the two High School Musical movies, pull out those old tunes and serve diner themed foods like milk shakes and classic hot dogs.

Example 2: Double Trouble Night

Turn family night into trouble fun by playing the infamous Trouble game and bending the rules such as eating with your fingers. Then relax around the TV to watch your favorite Pirates of the Caribbean movie and see how everyone’s favorite pirates get in and out of trouble

Example 3: Special Mission Night

This night is about solving puzzle and using your smarts to uncover a mystery. Create or solve puzzles, play Pictureka and consider adding in a movie like National Treasure. Secret receipts of creative snacks might also be revealed!

Example 4: Day of the Week Family Night Kit

For a Sweet Tooth Sunday. Walmart would provide the board game Candyland as well as the sugary sweet movie Pollyanna along soda and makings for a homemade ice cream sundaes.

What did we decide on in the Frugal Upstate household? Well, I went themeless.  Buddy loves reading “I Spy” books, so we decided to try out the new game “Pictureka“.  It may not be the cheapest game out there, but it is good for the whole family, and we will use it again and again!  For dinner we had frozen pizza (a cooking free night for mom is always a treat), the kiddos all picked out their favorite kind of chips (I introduced them to Funions) which I allowed them the liberty to eat on the sofa (I NEVER allow food in the den), and then we watched “Race to Witch Mountain“.  It was a fantastic fun family Friday!

Walmart & Hasbro want you to have a chance to  host your own Family Game Night, so they are giving me a $40 Walmart gift card to give to one lucky reader!

This is a super quick giveaway, a mere 24 hours, so you must enter between now and 8pm on Saturday September 25th 2009.

How do you enter? Easy Peasy!

Leave a comment telling me your favorite game/activity for the family to do together.

For an extra entry you can tweet about the contest.

Good luck!

For the last several years my family has had “Cookie Fridays”. Each Friday after dinner and chores we head to the kitchen and bake a new cookie recipe. We play games while the cookies bake, and then sit around the kitchen table with our glasses of milk and eat as many cookies as we can (it’s good to not have limits at least one day a week, right?)

Cookie Friday takes all of 40 minutes to be over and done with, but my kids look forward to it every week, in fact most of our dinner conversation include a hearty debate about what new recipe we will try the next Cookie Friday.

We’re a movie family. We have a huge carnival-style popcorn maker, crank that up and pop in a dvd or call up the Netflix queue.

My favorite family activity has always been camping. When we were kids, even when we couldn’t go away on a trip we would pitch the tent in the backyard and have hotdogs and hamburgers.

Once the tent was zipped up, we could be a million miles away in our imaginations.

Our family loves all sorts of games. We love playing WII family type games(sports, hasbro game, etc)We love playing Trouble and watching the five year old win. My personal favorite is when we have friends to dinner and we play Red Rover outside. We all live busy lives. When I get done with work and school I really try to enjoy my kids as much as possible.

We have an entire bucket full of board games – from scrabble to monopoly – but the one we always go back to is SORRY! We love that game!

  23. Jen Rowden says

    September 26, 2009 at 8:38 am

We like Sorry! and UNO. Those are our two go-to board games. We use Uno jr to play with the 4 year old. All three kids started playing jr and have moved up to our version of cutthroat Uno by the time they are 5. Sorry gets pretty cutthroat too. We sometimes do Scattergories with an adult group, very difficult for the younger set.

My husband and I love Ticket to Ride. With the toddler we enjoy our Marble Tower Game. With the 7-year old it’s Blockus or various card games. We’re always eager to add new games!

We love love love to play cards in my house. Poker, paging one [[it’s like Crazy Eights]], any game, you’ll find it here. On nights like Thanksgiving, we need TWO tables. If not, there won’t be enough cards in the deck to play with!

We find that games are terrific frugal entertainment. We play Scrabble and Boggle most often. We’re looking forward to trying Sequence. We received it recently as a gift from friends who enjoy it very much. We like air-popped popcorn for a snack with games. I’m thinking of making “kale chips” for a more innovative and nutritious snack.

I love the idea of game night. My favorite game is Monopoly. Though any old standard – candystand, cards, dominoes, trouble are great choices for some of the game nights. Anything that provides the background for the family being together without dominating the event by focusing everyone on mechanics of play rather than relaxed enjoyment. Try comparing the way the family interaction goes during a new game compared to an old familiar one.
