Review: Mrs Meyers

A few weeks ago Walmart sent me some of the Mrs Meyers Clean Day Aromatherepeudic products to try.  I’ve used Mrs Meyers hand soap before–I really enjoy the lovely scents and the fact that all their products are earth friendly as well:

FOR GENERATIONS we’ve had to put up with harsh chemical smells to get a good clean. Enter Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day. A collection of household products with essential oils from flowers and herbs that smell nice, but really pack a punch against daily dirt and grime. Our garden fresh scents include Lavender, Lemon Verbena, Basil, and Geranium. All earth friendly, cruelty-free and not tested on animals.

I started by trying out the laundry detergent.  Now you guys know I normally make my own detergent–but it just so happened that this box arrived just as I used up the last bit of my homemade laundry powder.  So I snagged the bottle of Mrs Meyers Lavender Laundry Detergent and headed in to finish up the last load of Princess’s clothes.

I was surprised at how small the bottle was–but then I realized that it was 4X concentrated which means that the little bottle actually contained enough for 68 loads.   That’s right-just a tablespoon of liquid washes a full load.  And it washed it well while leaving a light lavender scent. Mmmm!

I think that the size of the bottle alone is a good reason for folks to consider buying!  It’s light and easy to handle (which my more mature readers might appreciate) and it takes up very little space in your laundry room cupboard.

Another great idea is that they marked the number of loads left in the bottle on the side–so you can take a look at the side and see how many loads you have left before you need to buy more.  The text is actually molded into the plastic so it won’t rub off!

Next I tried the scouring powder.

My kitchen sink, installed by the previous owners, is a cast iron sink with almond enamel.  If anyone ever suggests that you get a white or almond enamel kitchen sink I would suggest that you run screaming in the other direction.  Seriously.  I hate to clean and have a high tolerance for ick–but the sink drives me nuts because it ALWAYS looks filthy and stained.  It forces me to scrub my kitchen sink much more frequently than I want to.

The Lemon Verbena Surface Scrub worked just like any other scrub.  Sprinkle on a damp surface and scrub away.

It worked fine.  I will say it does not work as well as my absolute favorite scrub which includes oxalic acid in it–but then again that one single product is the only thing I know of that works that way.  The Mrs Meyers scrub worked as well as the other products I’ve tried and had a much more pleasant scent! Most of the bottles had “Household Hints” on them.  The one on the cleaner read:

“If you’re facing a difficult stain, sprinkle our powdered scrub on a wet surface, lightly scrub and let sit for a few minutes.  Make yourself a cup of coffee, finish reading the paper, and then return for a final scrub. Your worries and stains will disappear”

That goes along with the advice that the awesome Heather Solos of Home Ec 101 gave me–for goodness sake, give the cleaner time to work!  I’ve found out that many of the products that I wasn’t really happy with. . . well. .. it turned out I was spraying and wiping right away without giving the product time to work.  Operator error rather than product error.  So remember, whatever cleaner you are using, seriously, give it a couple of minutes and then you usually won’t have to scrub so hard.

See?  Mrs Meyers is not only a great product, but they are very clever folks with well thought out products and packaging!  Here’s another example from the Lavendar countertop spray –the have a “time to go shopping” mark on the bottle to remind you that when the level reaches that point you should add it to your shopping list!

On that same spray–the hint is actually how to save money and use Mrs Meyers All Purpose Cleaner to refill the countertop cleaner spray bottle.  It even gives you the exact amount you need to add-4 Tablespoons of cleaner to 1/2 bottle of water.  You’ve got to admire a company that puts helping the customer save money over selling more units!

So next time you are in Walmart check out the Mrs Meyers cleaning products.  Every store should be stocking the Mrs Meyers liquid hand soaps but not all of them have the cleaning products.  You can use the “where to find us” box on the Mrs Meyers site to see if the Walmart near you carries the products you are most interested in.

Oh, and as a side not–sometimes they have the Mrs Meyers products all grouped together in the store–in my local store they are all shelved together in the aisle with the cleaning products–even the laundry detergent is there.

I share your feeling about the sink. I have a similar one and it is about 40 years old. Always looks stained and dirty. When we do a kitchen remodel- it will happen one of these days, I dont have a dishwasher 🙁 , that will definitely be replaced with stainless steel!

I’ve recently discovered the countertop spray and LOVE it on my granite! I’ll have to give the detergent a try. Nothing cleans my sinks better than barkeeper’s friend (and it is non-abrasive).

These are lovely products for light cleaning, but their website is clear they are not antibacterial. In other words, use MM to wipe up sticky spills but don’t use to clean up raw chicken goop. Nuff said.
