What makes a hero?  According to Wikipedia:

Characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness, display courage and the will for self-sacrifice—that is, heroism—for some greater good of all humanity. This definition originally referred to martial courage or excellence but extended to more general moral excellence.

For the Spiderman fans out there, you know that definition indeed describes Peter Parker/Spiderman (even if he is a bit of a reluctant hero).  To celebrate the release on 8/19 of The Amazing Spiderman 2 in a $24 Blu-Ray Combo Pack (with 13 deleted scenes plus 100 minutes of extras), Walmart and Sony Pictures are giving YOU the chance to be a hero for your school.

That’s right 5 Grand Prize Winners will win a visit from Spider-Man visit to your school, $1000 in Scholastic books, year supply of Elmer’s glue sticks, year supply of Crayola Crayons and more!  250 First Prize Winners will win a Spider-Man recorded PA announcement, Scholastic books, 10 Elmer’s glue sticks, 10 packages of Crayola Crayons and more!  Pretty sweet, right?

To enter you must create a short video and post it on YouTube explaining why your school is Amazing.  Then you have to tweet a live link to the video with the hashtag:  #BeAHeroContest.  This contest starts on 8/5 and runs through 9/14.  Full rules and information are available on Walmart.com.

You could be a Super Hero!Since I have done some video blogs in the past I thought I’d offer you guys a few tips on making your own videos to help you get started:

1.  Keep it short and to the point.  While you don’t need to memorize a specific script, know what the main points you want to get across are ahead of time.

2.  Make yourself notes.  I like to write my main bullet points on a piece of paper and tape them on my tripod right below the camera.  That way I can actually be reading my notes while I still seem to be looking at the camera!

3.  If you make a mistake, just stop talking, pause for a good 30 seconds or so, and then do it again.  That will give you a break to edit with later.

4.  Show your personality–you want the folks watching to be able to hear you and understand what you are saying, so don’t go completely crazy, but personality, fun and style will make a better video.

5.  Have fun!

Here’s one more fun thing for the release of The Amazing Spiderman 2–Walmart has some cool free wallpapers you can download!
