Is learning to can on your list of “Things to Do” in 2014? Well then I’ve got a giveaway for you!
That’s right, to get you going on your home food preservation adventures one lucky reader will receive a Ball Fresh Preserving Kit from Jarden!
So what’s in the Ball Fresh Preserving Kit?
- 21-quart water bath canner (enamel coated steel base)
- chrome plated canning rack
- canning jar lifter
- lid lifter
- canning funnel
- bubble remover and head space tool (not shown)
It’s everything you need to start boiling water bath canning (a $60 value). . . except for the jars and food.
And because I don’t want you heading into this adventure blind, I asked the folks at Ball to throw in a copy of their Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving! Of course you can also check out my relevant tutorials to get you started on your canning journey as well (psst–I’ve got some tips in the before and after canning session posts you won’t find in the Blue Book!):
Ball also sent me their Ball Canning Discovery Kit to check out. This is a VERY basic kit (at a very basic price–around $12) that is basically a basket that will fit in your average stock pot, 3 jars and some small scale recipes. This is a nice kit for someone who is not quite sure if they are interested in canning–a low cost entry point that uses a pot you already own. I have to admit, when I first saw it last year I though “what’s the point of making only 3 jars?”–but upon reflection I realized that you don’t have to do everything in bulk. Some folks only want a few jars of a specific type of jam , jelly, pickles or salsa–or only have enough fruit/vegetable to make a small batch. (and it would be just the size to fit a batch of jam from a Freshtech automatic jam maker. . . )
Now on to the giveaway–Good Luck!

I would love to try making some home made apple pie filling!
Oh, yes, I seriously need this!!!
I’ve been seeing the industrial size cans of tomato puree at my local salvage grocery store for between $3-$4, and it seemed like there ought to be something I could do with them. I’m thinking I could make this Basil-Garlic Tomato Sauce using them and re-can it! Seems like I use pasta sauce at least once a week for something, and at $1.99 a jar, this would be considerable savings and I’d have 32 ounces instead of 26.
I would love to master strawberry jam.
Lemony strawberry jam sounds delicious! I would love to learn how to preserve foods by canning instead of just relying on freezing. I had more strawberries than I could handle last summer.
I want to try blackberry jam, yum!
Would love to win this
I had a canner years ago and I don’t know what happened to it…maybe gave away with a move! Anyway, I have been thinking that I would like to give it a try again. Thanks for the giveaway opportunity. Blessings. 🙂
I think I would like to try to can the Barbeque Sauce.
I think I’d start with Strawberry jam or jelly as my first attempt!
I would like the Pina Colada Jam recipe.
I am trying to teach my kids to eat healthier, and I think canning is a great way to do it! If we can our food together, I think my kids will be much more likely to eat it!
Since I’m on a strict dairy/gluten/sugar/corn free diet for arthritis making my own food is even more important. I’m learning so many things and canning is on the list of things to learn this season!
As much canning as I’ve done I’ve never done anything with nuts in it and the almond jam sounds very interesting to me….so maybe that?
I always mean to can. I just never know where to start.
I think the first thing I would make is Applebutter. My grandmother used to make it and I haven’t had it in years. http://www.freshpreserving.com/recipe.aspx?r=186
I would love to learn how to can and I would make the fiesta salsa. It would be wonderful to win, I threw out so many tomatoes last summer because I didn’t know to can.
I would really like to try and make the antipasto relish! That sounds really great. I always grow lots of tomatoes thinking about how much I love eating a fresh tomato sandwich every day and despite enjoying those and making fresh pico de gallo I end up with lots and lots of extra tomatoes… This year I will also be growing lots of other veggies to puree for my new baby with my baby bullet… store bought babyfood is just not what I want to feed him. I want to learn to can anything extra and keep some for winter as well so I would love to win this giveaway 🙂
Ginger pear preserves! Yum!
I’m interested in learning how to can meats, My Grandmother did it once when I was small with some beef and I think a pressure cooker?? O.o Maybe. Also, I’m going to be growing more veggies fresh this year and hope to stockpile them in my basement for the following winter season, so I’d love any help I can get!!
You can use this canner for jams, jellies, pickles, fruit and tomatoes–but things like canned vegetables and canned meat must be processed in a pressure canner.
I would like to try to make the reduced sugar Strawberry jam. Sounds so good. It would be a money saver too !
I would most like to make the Fiesta Salsa.
I’d like to make orange marmalade with the oranges growing in my backyard. Yum!
I definitely want to make the mixed berry jam. I think i would try pickles after that!
I would make the Basil Garlic tomato sauce.
I would love to try the blueberry freezer jam.
I’d like to try the strawberry lemon marmalade.
I remember helping my grandmother can, and trying it on my own is on my “to-do” list. Thank you for the hosting the giveaway opportunity!
I’d start with the gazpacho from the “easy recipes” section.
I would love to have this to use this summer. I have lots of canning to do!
I want to try the strawberry lemon marmalade
I’d make strawberry or raspberry jam
Chutneys and jalapeno jelly!
I would love to try and make this homemade! http://www.freshpreserving.com/recipe.aspx?r=126
The Almond Delight Jam sounds amazing!
I would like to make the honey spiced peaches. Peaches are good for such a short time and this recipe could be used in so many other recipes as well as eaten alone or with ice cream. Yummy.
Gazpacho!
I think learning to make Antipasto Relish would be very handy to use up garden leftovers!
I would like try canning applesauce!
I always have a ton of cucumbers from the garden. And I usually end up making WAY more pickles than we could ever eat. I’d love to use some of them up in some Gazpacho this year. Yum!

would love to put something like tomato salsa jam up.
We are getting lots of seed catalogs in the mail and it makes me anxious for summer which means canning season is not far behind. I’ve used up nearly all my home canned tomatoes so definitely need to can those this summer.
i would love to do any kind of jam
I would like to make applesauce. Yum! Thanks for the great giveaway!
This would come in handy for all meat my husband brings home!!!
WEll, the boiling water bath canner is not an approved method for canning low acid foods like meat. You can use this canner for jams, jellies, pickles, fruit and tomatoes–but things like canned vegetables and canned meat must be processed in a pressure canner.
The Strawberry Lemon Marmalade – yum!!
I would love to have this! My water bath canning pot sprung a leak this week after a run-in with my husband. 🙂
I am still looking for a go-to salsa recipe that I like as well as my fresh salsa I plan on trying Ball’s this year.
This is my favorite salsa recipe: http://www.frugalupstate.com/recipes/wonderful-salsa-recipe/
I would love to do the reduced sugar pear jam!
Looking to start canning! This would be an awesome win!!!
