Giveaway: Ball Fresh Preserving Kit

Is learning to can on your list of “Things to Do” in 2014?  Well then I’ve got a giveaway for you!

Ball Fresh Preserving Kit 1 (3)

That’s right, to get you going on your home food preservation adventures one lucky reader will receive a Ball Fresh Preserving Kit from Jarden!

Ball Fresh Preserving Kit 1

So what’s in the Ball Fresh Preserving Kit?

  • 21-quart water bath canner (enamel coated steel base)
  • chrome plated canning rack
  • canning jar lifter
  • lid lifter
  • canning funnel
  • bubble remover and head space tool (not shown)

It’s everything you need to start boiling water bath canning (a $60 value). . . except for the jars and food.

And because I don’t want you heading into this adventure blind, I asked the folks at Ball to throw in a copy of their Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving!  Of course you can also check out my relevant tutorials to get you started on your canning journey as well (psst–I’ve got some tips in the before and after canning session posts you won’t find in the Blue Book!):

  • Getting Prepared For A Canning Session
  • Hot Water Bath Canning
  • What To Do After A Canning Session

Ball also sent me their Ball Canning Discovery Kit to check out.  This is a VERY basic kit (at a very basic price–around $12) that is basically a basket that will fit in your average stock pot, 3 jars and some small scale recipes.  This is a nice kit for someone who is not quite sure if they are interested in canning–a low cost entry point that uses a pot you already own.  I have to admit, when I first saw it last year I though “what’s the point of making only 3 jars?”–but upon reflection I realized that you don’t have to do everything in bulk.  Some folks only want a few jars of a specific type of jam , jelly, pickles or salsa–or only have enough fruit/vegetable to make a small batch.  (and it would be just the size to fit a batch of jam from a Freshtech automatic jam maker. . . )

Ball Fresh Preserving Kit 1 (2)

Now on to the giveaway–Good Luck!

I’ve been seeing the industrial size cans of tomato puree at my local salvage grocery store for between $3-$4, and it seemed like there ought to be something I could do with them. I’m thinking I could make this Basil-Garlic Tomato Sauce using them and re-can it! Seems like I use pasta sauce at least once a week for something, and at $1.99 a jar, this would be considerable savings and I’d have 32 ounces instead of 26.

I would really like to try and make the antipasto relish! That sounds really great. I always grow lots of tomatoes thinking about how much I love eating a fresh tomato sandwich every day and despite enjoying those and making fresh pico de gallo I end up with lots and lots of extra tomatoes… This year I will also be growing lots of other veggies to puree for my new baby with my baby bullet… store bought babyfood is just not what I want to feed him. I want to learn to can anything extra and keep some for winter as well so I would love to win this giveaway 🙂

Also, I’m going to be growing more veggies fresh this year and hope to stockpile them in my basement for the following winter season, so I’d love any help I can get!!

You can use this canner for jams, jellies, pickles, fruit and tomatoes–but things like canned vegetables and canned meat must be processed in a pressure canner.

WEll, the boiling water bath canner is not an approved method for canning low acid foods like meat. You can use this canner for jams, jellies, pickles, fruit and tomatoes–but things like canned vegetables and canned meat must be processed in a pressure canner.
