Summer is in full swing and my kids are having a ball! Days at the lake or pool, adventures in the backyard, riding bikes, camping out on the living room floor, picking and eating veggies fresh from the garden. We’ve been doing everything except think about academics and school.
Sure. I have good intentions. In theory we are doing daily reading time–but to be honest it’s been spotty. And writing skills, well we haven’t done much of anything. That’s where the good folks at Zebra Pens come in.
They suggested that writing post cards and letters to family, friends or a pen pal was a great way for kids to practice their writing skills in the summer without feeling like “work”. They sent me a really nice selections of pens, mechanical pencils, highlighters, gel pens and some blank post cards to to get the kids started.
We got the kit right before our annual vacation to a cabin in the Adirondacks. I tossed it in my bag and brought it along-after all, there is no TV at the cabin, and eventually the kids do have to come out of the lake! I figured that writing post cards would be a good activity for when we needed some “quiet” time. About half way through the week we had a bit of down time one morning and I suggested it would be fun for the kids to write some postcards-they both decided to write to their cousins in Texas.
The kids had a great time writing the cards and are anxiously awaiting replies. I am sure it will be easy to get them to write again when they hear back from their cousins!
All in all it was an inexpensive way (even if I had bought the pens, cards & stamps myself) to keep the kids quietly occupied for a while, work on their writing and make a connection with their cousins who live far away. I’d call that a win!
Thank you Zebra Pens!
